The folks at TiVo may be embattled, but they remain defiant. The speculation that the pioneer of DVRs is losing favored-nation status with the folks at DirecTV and may soon be jettisoned is rising to a fevered pitch. In the face of all this, TiVo President Marty Yudkovitz insists the Rupert Murdoch-controlled satellite operator will remain powered by TiVo.

While you have to admire Yudkovitz's never-say-die attitude, it's hard to ignore the fact that News Corp.'s satellite operations globally are driven by News Corp.-backed NDS and that the company has designs on consolidating its business at DirecTV.

As TiVo grasps for traction with other revenue streams, how the DirecTV situation plays out could be a make-or-break scenario.
