Editorial guidelines

Published on .

The American Society of Magazine Editors unveiled a new "standard for editorial independence" at the American Magazine Conference. Frank Lalli, ASME president and Money managing editor, said ASME will appoint a committee to investigate possible violations of the standard. If the committee finds an "egregious violation, it may recommend ASME suspend the offending magazine from participation in the National Magazine Awards," he said.

The new standard, which says that "the chief editor of any magazine must have final authority over the editorial content," was unanimously adopted by the ASME board earlier this month. ASME also has drafted proposed editorial guidelines for online content, Mr. Lalli said.
