ESPN nears real-time stats

Published on .

ESPN SportsZone is now offering its users a new "Real-Time NBA Score Service," which gathers game information directly from the NBA's official courtside statistical system and transmits it minute-by-minute via the SportsTicker newswire. The service is possible due to a federal court ruling that National Basketball Association scores are public domain information and can be transmitted by other parties. NBA had filed suit against SportsTicker for transmitting its scoring information.

ESPN is now a charter subscriber of the new SportsTicker service, which carries the "Authorized Real-Time Statistics Distributor" tag. Starwave Corp., partner in the SportsZone service, is also a partner in the NBA's Web site.
