Estonia to say yes to alcohol, tobacco ads

Published on .

TALLINN, ESTONIA -- The Estonian government intends to present a new draft law on advertising to parliament in December, Mihkel Parnoja, head of the legislature's Economy Commission confirmed November 12. The new draft proposal allows the advertising of tobacco and alcohol products, albeit with serious restrictions.

A special working group has formed to re-write an earlier draft law on advertising of last April. "The new law will oblige manufacturers to state risks involved in the use or consumption of their products. This risk must be stated clearly in large-sized print on product packaging" said Parnoja.

The proposal allows the advertising of alcohol on TV and newspapers. However, the marketing of tobacco products is restricted to newspapers, magazines, billboards and sponsorship.
