GEMS Television launched a watch-and-win promotion targeting viewers of its Hispanic programming, offering prizes ranging from luxury vacations to TVs, home stereos, video cameras and telephones. Launched in 1993, GEMS claims to be the No. 1 panregional Spanish-language cable network, reaching more than 10 million homes in the U.S. and Latin America. It is jointly owned by Cox Communications and Empresas 1BC, Caracas. The promotion, continuing through mid-October, is handled in-house.

Toyota Motor Sales USA signed as a major sponsor of Bridal Guide's annual "Bride of the Year" essay contest, in the carmaker's first bridal magazine promotion ever. Being launched in the January/February 1998 issue, the contest will award one winning couple a wedding plus gifts worth more than $50,000, including a lease on a new Toyota Corolla. The promotion is handled in-house.
