EVENTS & PROMOTIONS: PROMO SPOTLIGHT: ARIZ. DEPT. OF HEALTH SERVICES REVEALS RAVAGES OF SMOKING

By Published on .

Marketer: Arizona Department of Health Services, Phoenix.

Effort: Ash Kicker.

Agency: Riester Corp.

Twist: To shock kids into awareness of the health dangers of cigarette smoking, Riester created a giant, interactive touring model of the inside of a body riddled by cancer. Entering through a huge, blackened mouth, thousands of kids have taken the 10-minute tour, backed by a local TV and outdoor campaign with Arizona's long-running anti-smoking ad theme, "Tobacco: tumor causing, teeth staining, smelly puking habit." Next month, a new version of the exhibit hits the road, depicting a scientific smoking laboratory gone awry.

Vital statistics: The Ash Kicker began its odyssey to visit nearly every Arizona school in September 1996. Its popularity has spawned the sale of T-shirts and related merchandise throughout the tour. For more information, call (888) 828-7774.
