Excite and Amazon.com report fourth-quarter losses

Search engine Excite and online book giant Amazon.com both reported net losses in quarterly reports released Jan. 22. Excite reported a net loss of $3.7 million for the fourth quarter that ended Dec. 31. Excite's revenue rose to $18.7 million in the fourth quarter, up 30% from the preceding quarter.

Amazon.com reported a net loss for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31 of $9.3 million, compared with a net loss in the previous quarter of $8.5 million. Amazon.com reported sales of $66 million in the fourth quarter, up 74% from the previous quarter.
