Excite begins to payback Netscape loss

Published on .

After shelling out $70 million to Netscape Communications Corp. to hold a prominent two-year search engine spot on Netscape's Netcenter portal site, Excite announced June 2 that it's already begun to recoup its losses. Excite has booked $21 million in ad revenue from selling ads on program search, directory and a suite of channels for Netscape NetCenter.

On Netscape's NetSearch powered by Excite, Excite will program and sell 50% of the advertising in the first year. Excite also said it's hired 12 additional sales people since it signed the agreement with Netscape there weeks ago.
