Excite@Home to buy game site Pogo.com

Published on .

Broadband portal Excite@Home agreed to buy online gaming site Pogo.com, San Francisco, for an undisclosed amount. Pogo will operate as a subsidiary of Excite and continue to sell its multiplayer game services to other sites, which include Alloy, iVillage and NBC Internet. Excite said it plans to use the service to enhance its interactive TV offerings.

Pogo and Excite have had their problems. While Excite recently reported having 2 million members, it's still behind in subscriber goals. It also reported a net loss of $45.3 million in its latest quarter. Meanwhile, Pogo suspended a $10 million offline ad campaign last month to focus on profitability. The site and agency Butler, Shine & Stern, Sausalito, Calif., parted ways five months ago.
