Excite@Home revamps its search service

Published on .

In a move to keep up with the latest wave in search engine technology, Excite@Home is revamping its search service with the unveiling of Excite Precision Search. Like Google, a new search engine known for the quality and speed of its search results, Excite Precision Search analyzes and serves up Web pages based on their popularity (how many pages link to that particular site).

The Excite Precision Search also tries to streamline the user interface, directing users to tabs where they can find results in a particular category. such as news articles, photos, audio/video files and Web directory."What we've done now is to relegate content to separate indexes--rather than trying to put everything on the [same] page, in a Swiss Army knife-type approach,'' said Abbot Chambers, senior director of search and directory products for Excite@Home. Mr. Chambers said it's also trying to appeal to advertisers by making pages less cluttered. "The stripped-down and clean interface we think will help call more attention to the ads.''
