FCC pressed on TV alcohol ads

Published on .

Alcohol ad critics urged Federal Communications Commission Chairman Bill Kennard to seek approval for an official inquiry that would examine whether TV ads for alcoholic beverages affect underage drinking. The Coalition for the Prevention of Alcohol Problems, Washington, in a letter to the FCC chief, cited a recent national telephone survey in which 70% of the respondents supported such an inquiry. FCC members deadlocked 2-2 when they voted on opening an inquiry last July under then FCC Chairman Reed Hundt.
