Follett College Stores Corp., the nation's largest college bookstore operator, is entering the media business.

This fall, the company will offer a 1-hour original satellite news broadcast-modeled after Cable News Network's Airport Channel and K-III Communications Corp.'s Channel One-in its bookstores at selected large universities.

The college bookstore "is a place to hang out," said President Jim Baumann. "We want it to be a destination point, not just a place to get your course materials and get out."

JOINT VENTURE WITH CONUS

The news service-called Big Media on Campus-is a joint venture between Follett and Conus Communications, a limited

partnership of Hubbard Broadcasting, owner of U.S. Satellite Broadcasting, and video producer TV Books.

BMOC will offer news, public affairs and lifestyle stories produced by students and Conus' news-gathering cooperative. The programs will be beamed via satellite to TVs in the bookstores.

During the test run, select advertisers such as Coca-Cola Co. and Champion Products are airing spots, at no charge.
