James S. Berrien, president of American Express Travelers Cheque Group, was named to the new position of president of Forbes magazine, effective Aug. 1. Mr. Berrien, 47, will have operating responsibility for advertising sales, marketing, promotion and circulation for Forbes and its supplements, Forbes ASAP and Forbes FYI. He assumes those duties from Forbes Chief Operating Officer Timothy C. Forbes, who has handled them since the 1998 departure of Forbes Publisher Jeff Cunningham. Mr. Berrien also will oversee the Forbes Management Conference Group. Rich Karlgaard, named publisher and "chief evangelist'' for Forbes magazine after Mr. Cunningham left, retains the publisher title. Mr. Berrien, a former group publisher of American Express Publishing titles Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine and Departures, also spent nine years
