Forbes' role may grow

Published on .

Bob Dole's choice of Jack Kemp as his presidential running mate may have the effect of reinvigorating the role of Steve Forbes in the Republican Party. Mr. Forbes said Sunday night in San Diego that he was "elated" at the choice. He said he would continue as publisher of Forbes magazine, but is now in conversation with the Republican National Committee about becoming one of the Dole campaign's surrogate speakers at rallies around the nation.

Mr. Kemp endorsed Mr. Forbes when the publisher was campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination in March, well after it was clear that Mr. Dole would win the GOP nomination. Many Republicans, including Mr. Forbes, had expected the endorsement would exclude Mr. Kemp from the GOP ticket.
