Ford India to launch six autos during next 10 years

Published on .

BOMBAY -- Ford Motor Co. will launch six automobile models in India over the next ten years, the No.2 U.S. automaker's chairman said on August 26 while inaugurating the factory rollout of the Ford Escort, its first car in the Indian market. Hindustan Thompson Associates, Bombay, handles Mahindra Ford India.

The joint venture, owned 50% by erstwhile Jeep licensee Mahindra, projects the sale of 20,000 Escorts by the second half of 1997. Mahindra Ford's next offering will be the Fiesta small car.

The Escort will compete with recent launches in the same mid-size saloon segment from global rivals General Motors Corp., Daewoo Motors, Suzuki Motor Corp. and Automobiles Peugeot, each of which has Indian joint ventures.
