DETROIT ( -- Ford Motor Co. today named Fredrik Arp president-CEO of Volvo Cars Corp., effective Oct. 1.

Mr. Arp is president-CEO of Trelleborg, a polymer supplier to the auto industry based in Sweden, where Volvo is headquartered. Mr. Arp succeeds Hans-Olov Olsson, a 39-year Volvo veteran who will become chairman of Volvo Cars' board.

Mr. Arp will report to Mark Fields, executive vice president of Ford's Premier Automotive Group and Ford of Europe.

Mr. Olsson has been president-CEO since July 2000 after a two-year stint running Volvo Cars of North America. He's been a Ford vice president since fall 2001. Mr. Olsson joined Volvo in 1966 as a systems engineer, but switched to the sales and marketing side in 1982 as an overseas director heading markets outside Europe. In 1987, he was vice president of global marketing and sales.
