Ford sees U.S. market share slip

Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., said its U.S. market share slipped more than two points in the third quarter, to 23.1% from 25.8% in the year-ago period. In the 1998 quarter, a strike disrupted sales at rival General Motors Corp. GM earlier reported its third-quarter U.S. market share has rebounded to 28.9% from a strike-depressed 24.1% in 1998. In Europe, Ford said its third-quarter share of market rose to 11.1% from 10% a year ago. The auto marketer said it earned $1.11 billion worldwide in the third quarter, an 11% gain over 1998, on revenue of $31.3 billion, up $4.8 billion.
