Charlotte Beers' career

Education: Studied math, physics at Baylor University, Waco, Texas.

Career highlights: Joined Mars Inc. as research analyst. Moved to J. Walter Thompson USA, Chicago, later becoming its first senior VP. From there, she joined Tatham-Laird & Kudner as first female managing partner; was named chairwoman in 1986. In 1988, she became the first woman to chair the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

Left Tatham in 1992 to become chairman-CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. Named chairman emeritus in April 1997.
