Freedom Magazines said it is acquiring 50% of CurtCo Publishing, publisher of Curtco's Home Theater Technology, Mobile Sound Competition, plus a buyers guide and a soon-to-launch title, CurtCo's Home Entertainment. The deal, estimated to be under $10 million, marks the first magazine acquisition for Freedom Magazines, a subsidiary of Freedom Communications, parent of the Orange County Register.

Earlier this year, Freedom Communications acquired WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, Fla., for a price estimated to be in excess of $150 million. Sam Wolgemuth, president of Freedom Magazines, said the company aims to build a special interest consumer magazine group with sales over $100 million within the next few years.
