Friendly fire: Banks go light with summer ads

Trying to inject friendliness into this summer's bank advertising, Banco Popular features its own popular clients while Washington Mutual launches in New York with humor and semi-nudity.

In the world of Washington Mutual created by La Agencia de Orci, Los Angeles, untrustworthy big banks strip their clients down to their underwear, while their clothes magically snap back on at Washington Mutual. Orci created the Hispanic tagline "Come live the difference" rather than using the general market's "Another revolution in banking."

WPP Group's Bravo Group handles English-language general-market and Hispanic advertising for Banco Popular. Spots feature a series of real clients who are both popular and Popular. The theme is "Make dreams happen." Don Francisco, host of widely watched Univision TV show "Sabado Gigante," is the spokesperson for the Hispanic ads.
