FTC charges Exxon

The Federal Trade Commission says oil companies are overstating claims for their superpremium gasolines. While Amoco Oil Co., Sun Co. and Unocal Corp. settled with the FTC and pulled ads, Exxon Corp. is fighting. The FTC on Tuesday charged that Exxon is misleading consumers by making claims, in advertising from McCann-Erickson, Houston, that its Exxon 93 Supreme will make engines cleaner and significantly cut maintenance costs.
