FTC fines Sara Lee

Sara Lee Corp. Tuesday agreed to pay a record $3.1 million civil fine for failing to notify the Federal Trade Commission before buying the assets of its major competitor in the shoe-care business. FTC officials accused Sara Lee of a "blatant" attempt to avoid antitrust review. Sara Lee owns Kiwi Brands and the action stems from Sara Lee's 1991 acquisition of Reckitt & Colman's shoe care business including the Meltonian, Griffi and Magix brands in the U.S. The FTC earlier required Sara Lee to divest several of the brands.
