FTC orders adult site shut down

Published on .

The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday said it had won a federal district court order closing down an adult Web site that offered Web surfers something a little more exotic than they may have been seeking--a secret switch to an international phone line and $2 per minute phone charges for the rest of the computer session. The FTC charged that a viewer that Audiotex Connection, Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Promo Line, Dix Hills, N.Y., put on their sites (http://www.beavisbutthead.com, http://www.sexygirls.com and http://www.Iadult.com) actually was a program to disconnect the call and reconnect through the international line without telling consumers. The program stayed connected until the computer was shut down, even when Web browsers were turned off.
