FTC seeks to block Heinz from Beech-Nut buyout

Published on .

The Federal Trade Commission last week said it would seek a preliminary injunction to block H.J. Heinz Co.'s pending $185 million acquisition of Milnot Holding Co., owner of Beech-Nut baby food. The FTC cited concern that combining Heinz and Beech-Nut would violate federal antitrust laws by creating a duopoly between leader Gerber Products Co. and the new Heinz/Beech-Nut, which together would control 98% of the U.S. baby food market. Heinz said it intends to defend the acquisition.
