Gartner: Web retailing surpasses $29.3 bil in 2000

Published on .

Internet retailing in North America should surpass $29.3 billion in 2000, up 75% from 1999, and growing from less than 1% to as much 5% to 7% of all retail sales, industry consultant Gartner Group, San Jose, Calif., reported June 27. The group predicts significant growth in the entertainment and household consumables category. But with dotcom consolidation on the horizon, e-tailers with the strongest brand presence will survive, while niche players need to form alliances to maintain their revenues, the consulting group reported. It highlighted consumer service as another area that needed attention.
