Gates blasts Microsoft suits

Published on .

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates called the antitrust lawsuit filed today by the U.S. Justice Department, and parallel lawsuits filed by 20 states, "a step backwards for America, for consumers" and for the computer industry. He said weekend settlement talks ended after the Justice Department insisted Microsoft bundle the rival Netscape Communications Corp. browser with Windows 98. Mr. Gates added Microsoft had been willing to include a Netscape Web link on Windows but stressed the company wouldn't agree to bundle the rival. As expected, Microsoft shipped Windows 98 today to PC makers.
