Gateway to say McCann's the one

Published on .

Gateway 2000, North Sioux City, S.D., is expected to announce March 27 the official hiring of McCann-Erickson Worldwide as agency for its estimated $50 million to $70 million account. The move has been expected since Gateway on March 19 fired D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles. McCann will open a small service office near Gateway headquarters, according to people close to Gateway. Separately, McCann executives will meet late this week with Silicon Graphics Inc., Mountain View, Calif., to try to persuade the company that the Gateway assignment isn't a conflict with McCann's recently won $40 million Silicon Graphics account. Silicon Graphics is mulling whether to replace McCann, possibly with finalist Arnold Communications, Boston, and a media-buying service. Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco, also is believed to be pursuing Silicon Graphics.
