says General Motors Corp. will lead the list when its Aug. 4 issue with the Global 500 rankings hits newsstands next Monday. General Motors, with 1996 revenues of $168.4 billion, and Ford Motor Co. (just under $147 billion) rank one and two on the new list of the world's largest companies. They displace two Japanese trading companies that have led the list for the past two years--Mitsui & Co. and Itochu Corp.; they now rank Nos. 3 and 4. The U.S. has the most companies_162_on the 500 list, Fortune
says, up from 153 last year. Japan is second with 126 companies.
