General Motors Corp. Chairman John Smith Jr., one day after a major restructuring of GM North American Operations was unveiled, said the auto marketer needs to make even more changes. In a speech to the University of Michigan Management Conference, Mr. Smith said, "Speed and agility will be the hallmarks of this new General Motors." He said GM will introduce 23 new cars and trucks in the next three years and an average of one new product every 28 days between now and the middle of the next decade. While reducing the total number of offerings, he said GM will actually expand market coverage because half the new products will be innovative concepts aimed at redefining existing product segments and creating new segments. Future changes will include manufacturing, he said, adding the goal isn't to cut jobs. GM, which significantly cut its ad spending during the recent seven-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union, hasn't revealed its post-strike ad strategy.
