GM, SAIC sign contracts

General Motors Corp. and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., China's largest carmaker, signed joint venture contracts in Beijing to form a new $1.57 billion auto company in China. The long-planned venture plans to start building Buicks at a new plant in late 1998.
