Published on .

General Motors today announced a change of guard at two of its divisions. Edward Mertz, 59, general manager at Buick since 1986, will retire after 40 years at GM. His successor is Robert Coletta, 59, now general manager, sales and service at Buick. John Grettenberger, 59, Cadillac's general manager since 1984, is retiring after nearly 34 years at GM. His successor is John F. Smith, 45, now president of GM's Allison Transmission Division. Both retirements are effective Feb. 1 and come in the wake of retirements of the general managers of Oldsmobile and Chevrolet earlier this year.
