GOP pushes ahead with TV dereg plans

Despite reservations on the part of their top Democratic co-sponsor, Republicans are plowing forward with plans to radically deregulate the broadcast and cable industries, with a subcommittee vote expected May 17, Electronic Media reported. At hearings last week, ranking Commerce Committee Democrat John Dingell of Michigan threatened to pull his support from the sweeping telecommunications reform bill if Republicans adopt amendments to deregulate broadcast ownership and allow foreigners to own broadcast stations.
