Republicans on Monday morning began TV coverage of their convention minus some expected advertising from the City of San Diego. The GOP decided late on Sunday to drop plans to have the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau buy media time. The visitors bureau was getting $1.3 million from Amway Corp. to pay the cost, but Democrats called the deal illegal party spending and filed a challenge with the Federal Election Commission.
San Diego was to get prominent mention and features on the party's convention coverage that is running a half-hour each morning on cable's USA Network and two hours a day on the Family Channel. Republican National Committee Chairman Haley Barbour said Monday morning that the loss of sponsorship won't greatly affect programming plans.
