GTE acquires BBN

Published on .

GTE Corp. today announced it is acquiring Internet service provider BBN Corp. GTE also said it formed an alliance with Cisco Systems to develop data networking services and purchased a fiber-optic network from Qwest Communications. GTE has also established a new unit to market integrated voice, video and data solutions both within and outside GTE's current markets. Lew Wilks, formerly GTE's president of business markets, has been named president of the unit. Ogilvy & Mather earlier this year was awarded the estimated $80 million GTE account.
