GTE mainStreet goes to California

GTE Corp. will introduce GTE mainStreet, an interactive TV service, in Ventura, Calif. mainStreet Interactive Television will be offered as an added service (for about $4 per month) to americast cable customers who subscribe to a premium channel like HBO or Showtime. mainStreet offers a handful of original interactive productions produced at its studio in Santa Monica, Calif. One show called Virtuality is a two-way TV show for kids where they can navigate mazes, play word games and perform magic tricks with their remote controls. mainStreet is also available in a few markets in Florida via GTE's americast service. americast is a cable programming alliance of Ameritech Corp., SBC Communications, GTE and Disney Corp.
