New head for Unilever's European fabric conditioners

LONDON--James Hill has been named chairman of Lever Brothers U.K. and chairman of the fabric conditioners category for Europe. He succeeds Art Weijburg, who was appointed last year as director, detergents, of Hindustan Lever in India.

Mr. Hill joins from Lever's European detergent business, where he was head of the fabric cleaning category and on the board of Unilever Home and Personal Care Europe. During 1998 Mr. Hill led the successful launch of Lever's new laundry detergent tablets across Europe. Persil Tablets achieved a market share of more than 9% within four months of its launch.

In 1980, Mr. Hill joined Unilever's personnel department before moving into brand management. In 1991, he took on the dual role of European marketing manager for Radion and fabrics marketing manager based in Lever Spain. In 1993 he was named chairman of Lever Hellas, the detergents and personal products company in Greece, before moving to become head of the fabric cleaning category in 1996.
