Hewlett-Packard in joint venture with Japan's Softbank

Published on .

TOKYO--Hewlett-Packard Co. will team with Japanese Internet high-roller Softbank Corp. to form a venture that will start operations later this year to sell HP products and information technology services.

The company, to be named later this year, will be jointly owned by HP and Softbank. Early marketing plans call for selling HP computers, printers and other graphics processing materials over the Internet. Operations should kick into full gear by the fall.

The venture will also aim to provide IT infrastructure products to Japanese corporations and individual consumers.

"The formation of this new company is an innovative way for us to participate in the exploding Japanese market," says HP President-CEO Carly Fiorina.
