An HP spokeswoman said the departure of Ms. Johnson, senior vice president of corporate marketing, is unrelated to Ms. Fiorina's. Ms. Johnson, in fact, resigned Feb. 4, but the board asked her to stay on through a transition to a new CEO and HP's first-quarter earnings report.

Report to CMO
HP corporate marketing staff and executives will report to Chief Marketing Officer Mike Winkler on an interim basis.

At HP, Ms. Johnson's office was located near to Ms. Fiorina's, and she was known as a trusted advisor to the CEO. Ms. Johnson staunchly defended their professional relationship after Ms. Fiorina's departure last week, saying she was "angered" at the suggestion she was distancing herself from the embattled CEO. She said she was proud of the work they had done together at HP.

Return to Apple
For Ms. Johnson this is a return to Apple, where from 1988 to 1992 she worked as an independent marketing communications contractor there. She joined HP in January 1999 from IBM, where she had helped craft its e-business strategy.

Apple did not return calls for comment.
