Ms. Lyons will be in charge of all global marketing strategies and will report directly to CEO Mark Hurd, who was named to his post in March after the departure of former CEO Carly Fiorina in early February.
The 48-year-old Ms. Lyons, who was the senior vice president of business imaging and printing, succeeds Mike Winkler in the post.
Winkler's other role
Mr. Winkler will remain with the company, focusing on his other role as executive vice president of HP's Customer Solutions Group.
Although Mr. Winkler held the CMO title, former Senior Vice President of Marketing Allison Johnson was responsible for overseeing the consumer marketing and branding push over the past five years. Ms. Johnson departed in February to take the top marketing job at Apple Computer, reporting to CEO Steve Jobs.
It is expected HP will continue the unified branding strategy formulated under Ms. Johnson and Ms. Fiorina. HP's agency is Omnicom Group's Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco.
