HP mimics Digital ads

Published on .

Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif., mimics Digital Equipment Corp.'s campaign in new ads targeting Digital UNIX computer buyers concerned about Digital's pending acquisition by Compaq Computer Corp. Compaq promotes the rival Windows NT platform. "Worried?" says a spread in The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, inserting the word in burgundy blocks similar to those in Digital's ads and logo. A similar HP ad --``Sold!''-- is in Fortune. Digital is exploring whether HP may be infringing on trademarks. Saatchi & Saatchi, San Francisco, handles HP; DDB Needham Worldwide, New York, handles Digital.
