HP in talks with Y&R, McCann

Published on .

Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif., was believed to be close this afternoon to deciding between Y&R Advertising and McCann-Erickson Worldwide, both San Francisco, to handle the launch of HP's as-yet-unnamed $7.6 billion spinoff. Spending is expected to rival the $61 million AT&T Corp. spent to launch Lucent Technologies. At deadline, there was speculation the business would swing to Y&R, whose sister company Landor Associates earlier was recruited to name the spinoff. Shirley Horn, the spinoff's director of brand management, and McCann executives weren't available at deadline. Y&R wouldn't comment.
