Time magazine names Eisenberg

Lee Eisenberg, former Esquire editor and a co-founder with Chris Whittle of the Edison Project to develop private schools, is joining Time as editor of creative development, a new position. Among his responsibilities will be the development of a section called "Digital Quarterly," described by one insider as a "magazine within a magazine" that will appear inside Time and focus on high-tech consumer news.

President Clinton today authorized the filing of a formal complaint against Japan with the World Trade Organization in the trade fight over autos, and the administration said it will announce in the next several days a list of Japanese products that could be hit with punitive tariffs. Speculation is that the target list will include Japanese luxury cars, minivans and sport-utility vehicles. The U.S. is seeking pledges from Japanese automakers to increase their purchases of American-made auto parts, and is also demanding a relaxation of regulations seen as an impediment to the sale of U.S.-made cars and parts in Japan.
