IBM Corp. has signed a global advertising deal with Yahoo! in which IBM will advertise on all 22 Yahoo-branded sites through yearend. The agreement allows IBM to own certain categories and keywords for the whole year, including "computer software," "database" and "e-mail." Although terms of the deal are not disclosed, the scope of the arrangement makes IBM "one of our top advertisers," said Anil Singh, Yahoo's director of sales. Yahoo! reported about $8.5 million in ad revenues for the fourth quarter in 1996, up 55% from third-quarter revenues.
IBM's advertising will be executed in several languages to accommodate Yahoo's international properties like Yahoo! France, Yahoo! Germany, Yahoo! Japan and soon-to-be-launched Yahoo! Singapore. IBM's campaign on Yahoo! began rolling out in mid-March and will continue to run throughout 1997. The company is soon expected to sign additional global advertisers to similar deals.
