InfoSeek adds spider to search engine

Published on .

InfoSeek Corp. unveiled a new automated search engine that automatically indexes new sites as they hit the Web. The technology has boosted the number of sites indexed by InfoSeek to about 420,000, which is almost double the sites of most Internet guides. Rather than having a Web surf team search for new sites on the Web, InfoSeek is relying on an automated spider to do the job for it.

"With the way the Internet is growing, it's impractical to do all the indexing by hand," said a spokesman for the company. The expanded guide is the central piece of InfoSeek's search services, which include iSeek, an instant desktop access application; InfoSeek Personal, a customized news service; and UltraSeek, the company's next generation of search technology expected to launch this September.
