Interbrew buys Labatt's

Interbrew, Brussels, bought John Labatt Ltd. to become the world's fourth largest brewer, giving responsibility for all North American operations to the Canadian subsidiary. Interbrew will combine Labatt's U.K. and Italy operations into Interbrew Europe/Asia/Africa, preparing an introduction of flagship brand Stella Artois in North America. Labatt President-CEO Hugo Powell becomes chief operating officer for the Americas, and Interbrew General Manager Johnny Thys becomes chief operating officer for Europe/Asia/Africa.
