(May 24, 2001) -- Jack Morton Worldwide, a unit of Interpublic Group of Cos.' Allied Communications Group based in New York, laid off 70 people in its domestic operation, representing 8% of its U.S. workforce and 6% worldwide.

The company maintains 30 offices in the U.S. and other countries.

"The layoffs reflect a contraction in our business that is consistent with what we're seeing in the general economy," said a spokeswoman for Jack Morton Worldwide, a brand communications agency that develops live, digital and environmental experiences for companies' meetings and events. -- Cara Beardi
