Jeans lead school parade

Back-to-school clothes shopping is decidedly casual, according to a survey by CSC Consulting, New York. The survey of 150 households to determine shopping preferences for kids in grades 1 to 12. Jeans are the No. 1 back-to-school clothing item (purchased by 86%), followed by T-shirts (63%), sneakers (50%), sweaters (28%), jackets/coats (23%), dresses (20%), skirts (18%), socks/underwear (11%), shirts/blouses (6%) and uniforms (5%). Department stores will receive the bulk of the shoppers (44%), according to the survey, with 33% heading off to the discounters. Only 13% intend to shop at specialty stores while 10% will shop at the off-price/outlet stores.
