NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- On Dec. 15, 2000, when he stepped down and handed the CEO chair to John Dooner, then-Interpublic Group of Cos.' chief, Philip Geier, ebulliently announced: "I feel confident that I am leaving our employees, clients and shareholders in great hands."

Last week, Mr. Dooner himself stepped down as CEO and headed back to take a position with the individual agency network from which he came.
