Judge yanks Tagamet ads

Johnson & Johnson/Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co. this week was ordered to yank nine of 11 TV commercials and promotional materials for heartburn remedy Pepcid AC. A federal judge agreed with SmithKline Beecham, marketer of competitor Tagamet HB, that details of nine-hour relief and doctors' claims in ads from Compton Partners were problematic. SKB will modify promotional material as a result of a countersuit by J&J/Merck, and agreed not to claim Tagamet controls acid faster than Pepcid. Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, New York, handles Tagamet.
