taken a beating this summer and made the cuts to "get the financial performance up to its targets," a network spokesman said.

The spokesman wouldn't name any executives involved in the layoffs, but said cuts ranged across account, creative and production departments. He dismissed speculation that the agency would close.

Brian Heffernan, agency president for four years, tendered his resignation Wednesday. Bob Jeffrey, president of JWT North America, is assuming the post until a successor can be named.
